A Journey of Firsts:
Delheim celebrates connection exchange through a new four-part storytelling series filmed between Soweto and Stellenbosch.
Delheim Wine Estate’s latest short-film series, A Journey of Firsts, opens a heartfelt conversation about wine, belonging, and the people who make it part of everyday life. Now streaming on YouTube, the series follows Johannesburg creator Mpho “Soweto Hippie” as he trades city streets for vineyard dust and discovers that wine is far more than what’s in the glass.
The first episode begins in Soweto, where Mpho packs his bag outside his Soweto home and boards his first-ever flight to Cape Town. Excitement, nerves, and humour travel with him as he arrives in Stellenbosch to meet Delheim’s Nora and Victor Sperling and winemaker Nongcebo “Noni” Langa. What follows is a light-hearted cultural exchange told through vineyard visits, laughter, and the shared language of curiosity.
On a tractor ride up the mountain, Mpho learns about Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. When Victor suggests he pour out his tasting wine, Mpho laughs — “I ain’t throwing no wine out!” — a small but telling moment that captures the joy and authenticity at the heart of the series.
Later, a scene in a Stellenbosch wine bar adds humour to his learning curve: faced with a wine list “thicker than a Bible,” Mpho quietly slips out, still smiling, knowing he has much to learn. The next morning, among the vines with Noni and Roelof Lotriet, he begins to understand how knowledge grows – sip by sip, conversation by conversation.
“It’s not about perfection,” says Noni. “It’s about curiosity – and the courage to taste something new.”
Shot between Soweto and Stellenbosch, A Journey of Firsts celebrates connection, openness, and the beauty of shared experience — proof that wine culture, like friendship, belongs to everyone.
