The popularity of Delheim Wine Estate’s mushroom foraging forays on the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch has resulted in the event this year being held over two week-ends, allowing more visitors to enjoy a day of collecting their own mushrooms, followed by a true taste of Delheim hospitality with refreshments, food and a selection of the estate’s award-winning wines.
Delheim’s mountain pine forests are home to over 20 species of wild mushrooms, and guests are invited to come and search for and collect them on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th June, as well as 4th and 5th of July. This sees four opportunities for new and experienced mushroom foragers to get out and collect their own mushrooms, after which a delicious lunch with Delheim wines will be offered in the restaurant.
Each of the four days’ programme comprises a practical guide to mushroom identification followed by a foraging session in the Delheim woods. The day ends with a hearty curated lunch in the traditional ambience of the estate Vat Cellar, which includes tasty mushroom-related options, with plenty of opportunities for tasting and enjoying the estate’s range of exceptional wines.
With 2025 being the year in which the wine industry celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Pinotage grape, and Delheim being an early pioneer of Pinotage since 1960, a feature of this year’s mushroom event will be a selection of older Delheim Pinotage wines available for tasting along with other estate wines.
The daily mushroom immersion will begin with an introduction by mushroom specialist Gary Goldman while guests enjoy coffee, gluhwein, muffins and rusks. Goldman will then lead the popular foraging voyage in the Delheim forest on the slopes of Stellenbosch’s majestic Simonsberg.
Note that we cannot guarantee the discovery of any specific mushrooms. For the forage, dress for possible chilly weather – a rain jacket and good walking/hiking boots or shoes. Bring a basket and a small pocketknife for collecting.
The foraging session is to be followed by lunch and a selection of wines in the Vat Cellar
Please note that space is limited to 35 adults and five children – aged 6 to 17 – per day. Price is R1000 per adult and R850 for the youngsters.
